2021 Hair Trends
This Spring, we are heading to the salon with more than just “the usual” on our brains. The Spring Solstice is a time of renewal - a renaissance, if you will, and not just for beauty. The roll out of vaccines across the country marks the return of gatherings, events and life as it should be. With the low maintenance beauty looks of 2020 behind us, we are in the midst of a hair revival in 2021. From bold colors to super long locks, we are all looking forward to a year that is amped on creativity. Here are some of the looks we predict will make a splash in the lowcountry and in salons around the country.
Bold Color
If you have been thinking hard about the direction you want to go after savoring your low key, blended color through the last year, look no further. Bold color placement a la Dua Lipa’s bright platinum pieces are on the rise and here to hang out. Think of this as a very literal interpretation of the soft ‘money piece’ made popular by hand painted and balayaged styles.
This look could also be varied with a two-toned streak much like Bella Hadid’s red and gold e-girl look, or softened by adding dimension throughout your hair.
This look requires some back to back foil placement from your stylist, and a little more upkeep from you to keep your blonde fresh. So expect more trips to the salon. However, if you are going for the bold, the blonding session will be much less extensive than a full highlight service of yesteryear.
Super Long
Some trends emerge as a resistance to the status quo of the previous year, and some trends emerge as a nod to the ground work you laid during an entire year off of hair duty. Long, sleek strands are rising to the top of 2021’s greatest looks. Sure, your social life may have been squelched, but your hair health has never been better. Many of us had a little extra time to Olaplex, deep condition, and just generally not heat style or do anything to damage our ends. Hence, the long hair trend that’s sure to be a popular look for this year. These sleek strands are blunt and can be formed for any texture. Sleek doesn’t necessarily mean straight. Curly girls can certainly enjoy healthy, sleek curls within the trend and continue to let their curls grow long.
Just remember to continue all those nourishing habits if you want to keep your hair’s length! Another tip to consider is adding fullness or length with a row of hand tied extensions to keep your hair beautiful all the way to the ends. Hand tied extensions offer thickness without any bulkiness at the weft, and are easy to apply and remove sans residue from products.
Auburn and Reds
With everyone looking to spice things up this year, it only makes sense to veer into varying shades of red. Everything from deep, reflective red and auburn to copper and peach is making a splash in the world of color. Even the perpetual sandy blonde and new mom Gigi Hadid opted for a coppery tone in February 2021.
Depending on your natural level or current hair color, a red tone may initially require more consistent trips to the salon. If you are timid to try a bolder hue, try talking to your stylist about a semi permanent ruby gloss.
Curtain Bangs + Shags
One trend that appeared in 2020 is hanging around a while longer. Curtain bangs and shag haircuts are nothing new, but this year they evolve into an elevated (read: not at home cut), consistently fringey cut. The curtain bang trend can be applied at almost any length bang and to practically any existing hair cut. It is a perfect gateway bang, so don’t be surprised if the light layering or a curtain bang leaves you wanting to do more. In which case, I suggest you try a variation of a shag. This haircut can also be applied in varying lengths, however, we suggest only lengths at or below the shoulders. Hair that is too short could place you into mullet territory when all of those over directed layers start happening.
The landmark of a shag cut is a shattered cut on top with no real part and a perfect face frame. This hairstyle is perfect for any hair texture and is especially trendy for curly girls that are willing to try bangs. Be sure to ask for internal layering to help debulk your hair. The beauty of a shag is that it looks great on an air dried style or with a fresh blowout.
Big 90’s Blowout
Speaking of a fresh blowout, a style we are living and dying for is a fluffy 90’s blowout. When envisioning the perfect blowout, we hope Cindy Crawford in the iconic pepsi ad comes to mind. As 90’s inspired looks comes to the forefront of the present day, we can't ignore how voluminous hair is being spotted more often on Instagram feeds and in day to day life. This hairstyle is a classic because it shows beautiful movement and provides volume that lasts for days.
If you aren’t accustomed to blowing your hair out with such intention, it is actually quite easy to master. Grab a set of velcro rollers from your local beauty supply store and pop them in as you dry your hair just as you would hot rollers. If you want to upgrade your at home blowout, try the Dyson Airwrap styler. If you still need a top tier blowout for that event you’ve been waiting on for 2 years, try your stylist for a professional brush set blowout at the salon.
